In Memory of John Reed

We’ve been saddened by the passing of John Reed a couple of weeks ago. John had a long-standing connection to MPDE under an earlier name, dating back to early recruiting efforts by the founder, Sam Turner, to identify educators of color for suburban school districts. John was a newly certified teacher in Boston when Sam succeeded in convincing him to accept a position on the Cape at the Barnstable Public Schools. Not only did John join Barnstable PS as a history teacher, where he taught or over 25 years, but extended this service by volunteering to continue to be the Barnstable MPDE representative.

John’s contributions to MPDE throughout the years are too numerous to account for here and to other organizations, like the NAACP. I do want to mention, however, the incredible talent he had for drawing educators of color to Cape Cod school districts not only from within MA localities but also successfully from southern, HBCU colleges, a very challenging feat. His commitment to this mission was unquestionable as he made many of these contacts on his own when on his family vacation trips.

John will be sorely missed. MPDE plans to pay tribute to John in a special way, the details of which will be announced as soon as plans are finalized. We ask all MPDE members, although many did not get to know John, to keep his wife and his family in your thoughts. Attached here are the schedule for his funeral services and the address where condolences and cards can be sent.

• MPDE Annual Summer Retreat
Wednesday, July 17, 2019
Lasell College
1844 Commonwealth Ave.
Newton, MA 02466

The Representatives of MPDE Members districts came together in a Planning Retreat on July 17th to review and assess the results of the 2018-2019 Operations Plan and to develop the plan for 2019-2010. This was an annual event that MPDE has conducted over the years and one that provides the opportunity for the HR Directors and Administrators who represent the district members of MPDE to reflect on the Mission of the Organization to increase the representation of educators of color in MPDE districts.

Through the courtesy of Dr. Claudia Rinaldi, Associate Professor/Chair at Lasell College, MPDE was invited to conduct this year’s Retreat on Lasell’s campus. We are very grateful to Dr. Rinaldi, who participated in the MPDE Building Bridges Conference this past February and presented information on the program she conducts at Lasell, “Pathways to Increasing Teacher Diversity,” for the opportunity to enjoy Lasell’s campus for the 2019 MPDE Retreat venue.

Diversity Job Fair 2021

MPDE held its annual job fair virtually on March 31, 2021. Our districts were able to set up online booths to provide attendees with information about their schools, cities, and job openings. Candidates were able to connect with district representatives via a chatroom feature that allowed for audio/video calls. They were also able to explore an auditorium that included presentations about the job search process. Although we would have loved to foster these connections in-person, we were happy to provide a safe, positive, and productive event online!
